Digitally proclaiming the Gospel in the diocese of Ferns and beyond

‘The Hook of Faith’ is brought to you by ‘FERNS C.A.F.É’ (Catholic Adult Formation and Education) – a group in the diocese of Ferns, Ireland who are committed to the work of evangelisation and adult faith formation. It seeks to bring the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to bear on all sectors of society in a way that offers life and meaning to everyone. We recognise the challenge of this task at a time in the Church that needs healing and hope. The mission of ‘The Hook of Faith’ is to ‘Digitally proclaim the Gospel in the Diocese of Ferns and beyond’. Our hope is that the light that comes from our faith will reach a wide audience through this new age of digital media and will help transform lives through the joy of the Gospel.

Fr Jim Nolan is the Parish priest of Davidstown/Coutnacuddy here in the diocese of Ferns. In addition to his priestly duties and interest in horses, he has recently taken up another unusual hobby – that of writing icons. Fr Jim explains: ‘About two years ago, I began to attend iconography classes in New Ross that were being taught by Sr. Helen, a Carmelite Sister originally from Nigeria. According to Fr. Jim, this was far more than a painting class. Introducing our Patron Saints

We chose St Patrick, St Aidan, & St Therese of Lisieux as our patron saints. We've given them each their own seperate post so you can find out more about them.

Patron Saints of The Hook of Faith - St Aidan

ST AIDAN The patron saint of the diocese of Ferns is St Aidan. He was born at a place now called Port Island, in Templeport in Co. Cavan. The exact date of his birth is unknown but it was probably before the middle of the sixth century. He studied for the priesthood at St David’s foundation at Menevia in southern Wales before arriving back in Ireland at Ardamine in North Co. Wexford where he founded a number of local Churches. It was at Ferns in Co. Wexford that he established his most important monastic foundation. Though patron saint of our diocese, Aidan was certainly not the first Christian missionary in the area. St Ibar is believed to have preceded the arrival of St Patrick and was act

Patron Saints of The Hook of Faith - St Patrick

ST PATRICK (c. 386 – 461) The second patron saint of ‘The Hook of Faith’ is St Patrick – missionary Apostle and patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick was born on the West coast of Britain sometime around the late fourth century. When we was sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates and brought to the West coast of Ireland where worked as a slave and tended flocks for six years. In his Confessio, Patrick describes this time in his life as one of great suffering but a time when he turned to God and rediscovered his Christian faith as a source of meaning. Patrick interpreted his captivity as God testing his faith. He dedicated his time of enslavement to deepening his faith through constant prayer

Patron Saints of The Hook of Faith - St Therese of Lisieux

ST THERESE OF LISIEUX (1873-1897) The final patron saint of ‘The Hook of Faith is St Therese of Lisieux, patron of the missions. Therese Martin was born on January 2, 1873. She was the youngest child of Louis and Zelin Martin. Thérèse felt an early call to religious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the early age of 15, she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the cloistered Carmelite community of Lisieux, Normandy. After only nine years as a Carmelite religious, she died at aged 24, on 30th September 1897 following a slow and painful fight against tuberculosis.
