Today we have the magnificent Gospel of what is known as the road to Emmaus. It is a story of encounter, of pilgrimage, of accompaniment, of mercy, of Eucharist and conversion. Note that Jesus walks with the disciples even as they walk in the wrong direction. He re-shapes their hopes and showed them that Christ's suffering was necessary as he opens the Scriptures for them and breaks bread with them. It is in his presence that their hearts burn and as they recognised him at the breaking of the bread, the sharing of the Eucharist.
