The Gospel this Sunday is often chosen at funerals but is fitting for the times in which we live. It is a scene from the Last Supper on the night before Jesus died and took his leave of those who had placed their faith in him. There he said to them: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in me’. Here was Jesus asking them for their trust as he was about to be killed. The disciples had left everything to pin their hopes on this man. Yet now, they stood to lose everything. The dream was about to die with him the following day. But still he made this extraordinary request for them to keep trusting him, even beyond his death; that somehow he would make good on his promises and that the truth of what he stood for would endure.
