Friends, in today's Gospel, Jesus goes beyond the letter of the law and shifts the focus from acting to thinking. He teaches that what matters is not just the act but the spirit behind the bact. To illustrate his point, he uses the example of adultery. He points out that its not just the act of adultery that leads us astray and leads to harm but the disordered passions and thoughts that lead up to it. And so for Jesus, the revolution he came to bring begins in the heart and in the spirit. It is there that our thoughts, words and actions must be purified by his Spirit and our co-operation.
