MASS FOR SATURDAY 4TH JULY 2020

Friends, in today's Gospel, Jesus teaches about the need for 'new wine, new wine skins'. First, the theme of newness. Jesus' teaching was new with power behind it. People felt re-newed by his presence, words and power. So when his Word is preached today with faith and conviction, that same power is unleashed within those who hear it. Second, the metaphor of wine and wineskins speaks of this new teaching and truth needing to be received by new minds and new hearts. Old ways of thinking and behaving will not fit the broader vision and power of the Lord's plans for us. For the new wine to be held, and cherished, it needed to be contained and received by open hearts that were new. If the work of Christ was 'to make all things new' then may we be open to that newness today.
