ARE WE BETTER OFF WITHOUT RELIGION? A CONVERSATION BETWEEN MICHAEL NUGENT AND DAVID QUINN

Many atheists and skeptics these days argue (without much evidence) that the world would be a better place without religion. Many critics of religion point to violence and wars that religion have caused over the centuries. But it also true that Christianity in particular has prevented wars because it practices forgiveness, community and peace.

On a recent episode of The Pat Kenny Show, David Quinn had a lively debate about the future of religion in society with Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland. The item was prompted by comments from the Catholic archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, that religion is becoming almost invisible in society.

Although the debate between Michael and David was only 15 minutes long, it quickly expanded into a wide-ranging discussion about whether we are better off without religion. They covered secularism, the origin of human rights, crime in secular vs religious societies, Church and State and even evolutionary morality.

David's basic argument was that secular humanism ultimately rests on Christian foundations it won't acknowledge, has forgotten about, or takes for granted.
