In the video below, Fr Mike Schmitz reflects on a Christmas song that captures the hope of Christmas when God's light in the person of Christ and his kingdom came into this world to dispel the darkness of violence, sin and war. His reflection moves beyond a certain sentimentality that has become associated with Christmas. We see it on the cover of Christmas cards with nice images of snow, Santa, candles and lights. This has is place but the real circumstances of the first Christmas were much more raw, tough and dangerous. What it means for us today is that Christ does not come to us as a soft non-threatening little baby but as someone who wants to change our lives and change the world.
