THE CHOICE

Fr Jim Cogley

As babies we were born with closed fists, and when our life is over our hands are open. In between is the challenge to open up in order to discover the inner riches of our true Self. During life we make a fundamental choice between isolation and intimacy. Intimacy can be understood as into me you may see. Allowing others to see into my inner world is essential if we are to experience personal growth and journey towards wholeness. Even if we open up and become real with just one other person it creates a bridge to the outer world. Just like moving to another country just one good contact may be all that I need, and invaluable to finding my way. Society tends to understand intimacy in the sexual sense of naked bodies but physical closeness and lack of relationship are all too common. Genuine intimacy involves naked friendship where there is no pretence and no emotional hiding places
