In order to create a more happy, loving and peaceful world it can only happen from within. Was it Gandhi who said, ‘the change we want to see out there is what we need to become from within’? A useful tool to bring about inner change is to constantly monitor and gradually begin to change how we see things. Every time we get annoyed, angry or irritated by someone, to consciously change the focus from them to us. The question then changes from what is wrong with that person to what is this annoyance telling me about myself and why am I so critical, judgmental and upset? How is this person revealing my lack of love? As an exercise take a moment to think of some person who constantly gets up your nose and irritates you and then express the painful but liberating statement, ‘the cause of my irritation is not out there in that person, but in me.
