WORKING DOCUMENT FOR SYNODALITY

By Sean O' Leary

The “Instrumentum laboris” for the Second Session of the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 2024) is a guide for the Church’s ongoing journey. It emphasizes the importance of unity in diversity, the role of all members of the Church in fostering communion, and the need for ongoing discernment and reform. The document serves as a signpost for the Church’s mission in the contemporary world, grounded in the principles of synodality and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Introduction

The document begins with a reflection on the journey of the Church over the past three years, emphasizing the importance of synodality as an expression of the Church’s nature. It draws on the imagery of a banquet prepared by the Lord, symbolizing communion and conviviality for all peoples.

Foundations

The first part of the document lays the theological and ecclesiological foundations for synodality. It highlights the Church as the People of God and a sacrament of unity. The shared meaning of synodality is explored, emphasizing unity in diversity and the call to conversion and reform. The document stresses the importance of reciprocity among all members of the Church, including ordained ministers and laypeople.

Relations

The second part focuses on the various relationships within the Church. It discusses Christian initiation, the role of charisms and ministries, and the service of ordained ministers in fostering harmony. The document also addresses the relationships between different Churches and the broader world, emphasizing the concreteness of communion.

Pathways

The third part outlines the pathways for the Church’s journey. It emphasizes the need for integral and shared formation, ecclesial discernment for mission, and effective decision-making processes. These pathways are seen as essential for the Church to fulfill its mission in the world.

Places

The final part of the document identifies specific areas where the Church’s synodal journey takes place. It highlights the importance of local Churches within the universal Church and the bonds that shape the Church’s unity. The role of the Bishop of Rome in serving this unity is also discussed.

Questions

The questions that the Instrumentum laboris asks are: how to be a synodal Church in mission; how to engage in deep listening and dialogue, how to be co-responsible in light of the dynamism of our personal and communal baptismal vocation; how to transform structures and processes so that all may participate and share the charisms that the Spirit pours out on each for the common good; how to exercise power and authority as service.

Conclusion

The document concludes by reaffirming the commitment to synodality as a way of being Church in the world. It calls for a renewed focus on communion, participation, and mission, guided by the Holy Spirit.
