MASS READINGS FOR THURSDAY 23RD APRIL 2020

'Obedience to God comes before obedience to men'. Such was Peter's defence of his preaching of Christ risen. For Peter and for the Church, the law of God rises above, precedes and endures beyond State laws. This is not a call to civil disobedience, the disrespect of the law of the land or the establishment of a theocracy but a recognition that all State laws much be accountable to a higher standard of justice. Martin Luther King once wrote: ‘ There are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws….one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws’ (Letter from Birmingham jail). May we always have the courage to do what is right and may obedience to God and his justice and mercy be our rule of life.
