Friends, in the first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Silas are flogged for their efforts to preach Christ. They are also put in prison. During the night, the doors of the prison opened. Thinking that the prisoners escaped, the gaoler was about to kill himself for he would have been killed by those in charge of him had the prisoners escaped. Paul assured him of his presence and urged him not to harm himself. It was Paul's act of kindness and understanding that led to the man's conversion and that of his household.
