MASS READINGS FOR TUESDAY 2ND JUNE 2020

In the Gospel today, Jesus gives his famous answer to the Pharisees who try to catch him out as either a rebel against the Romans or else a traitor to the national cause and friend to the Roman enemy. But what did he mean by his response 'Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's'. Some interpret this today as the need for a complete separation of Church and State. The State has its own laws, the Church another, as if the two existed in separate and parallel worlds. On the contrary, St Thomas Aquinas said that all human law comes from the eternal law which is identical to the mind of God. This eternal law is reflected in the natural law found in the natural order of things.
