CROSSING THE TIBER - THE STORY OF GAVIN ASHENDEN

Gavin Ashenden was received in to the Catholic Church in Shrewsbury Cathedral, England in December 2019. His conversion received media attention because Gavin was formerly an Anglican Bishop and Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth. On 22nd December, the day of his reception into the Church, Gavin wrote and article in the 'Mail on Sunday' newspaper where he explained the reasons for his choice: 'I have come to believe that the Church of England has given up on the essentials of the faith at the points where it really matters. By contrast, I believe what Catholicism teaches is true. I now believe that only the Catholic Church has the courage, integrity and conviction to hold the Christian ground'.

For Gavin Ashenden, what is at stake here is more than a religious denomination. What is at stake is freedom of speech, freedom to believe, freedom to evangelize and freedom to worship. He sees as a major threat to these values, the neo-Marxist movement in the West that includes the destruction of religion and the family. In his words, we are involved in a battle and 'if we give way any further, we risk another Iron curtain. Only this time, it will separate the Christians East from the Marxist West - and we will be on the wrong side'.
