Last Saturday, 4th July, American celebrated their 250th Independence Day. It was an occasion for all Americans to celebrate, to look back and to reflect carefully on the original Declaration of Independence that leaves room for God. In the article linked below, David Quinn of the Iona Institute asks the provocative question: "But are these truths really self-evident?" He also questions what happens to the concept of equality if the foundation of a Creator God is taken away? Will it result in human rights being conferred instead of acknowledged as inherent? This is an important question for Ireland too, whose constitution begins with: "In the Name of the Most Holy Trinity, from Whom is all authority and to Whom, as our final end, all actions both of men and States must be referred".
