This is a modern version of the first Beatitude that appears in some Biblical translations. In a society that tries its best to keep God out of the picture and be as independent as possible there remains something that sooner or later brings us to our knees. We encounter some area of our lives that initially appears like a stumbling block that we can’t seem to overcome without a deeper connection. In Alcoholics Anonymous this is where we admit we are powerless over alcohol and need a higher power to restore us to sanity. The same is true for all addictions. We discover that there is a void of incompletion where no matter what we achieve, who we are in relationship with, or whatever we get is never enough. A significant loss of someone we love means that they are gone forever unless we have a spiritual connection. Life by its very nature directs us towards Spirit.
