CHURCH OF MERCY, CHURCH OF STANDARDS

In the life of the Church, there is a creative tension between God's mercy on one hand and standards on the other. One one hand, God's mercy can be misunderstood as a license for believers to live any way they choose, even in ways that are contrary to the teaching of Scripture and Tradition. In other words mercy cloaks over everything that is permitted without effecting change, conversion and repentance. On the other hand, if we over emphasise standards then we risk becoming a legal religion and lose sight of the real needs of the human person.

In this lecture, Dr Vincent Twomey sheds light on this tension between mercy and standards and how both are complementary to the other.
