The spiritual life is typically understood to begin in ascent. Sometimes we imagine the spiritual life as being like Sisyphus in Greek mythology who laboured to push the stone up the hill before it would roll back down to the bottom and he would have to start all over again to ascend once more. However, in Christianity, it begins with descent, namely the descent of God. As 1 John 4:10 says, God has loved us first. In this lesson, Fr. Paul Murray explores the significance of such a beginning. This is a fascinating insight that turns upside down what we possibly thought Christianity was all about.
