In the interview below, EWTN’s Colm Flynn talks to Fr Mike Schmitz in Dublin about his faith journey from being a young man who said he hated the Church to discovering his vocation as a priest.
He opens by candidly sharing his early complex relationship with the Catholic Church, confessing that he once hated the Church due to his pride and misunderstanding. Despite regularly attending daily Mass, he scoffed at teachings, especially those countercultural to society such as Church teachings on contraception (Humanae Vitae).
His resentment stemmed partly from dismissive answers he received from some theological educators which fuelled a belief that the Church was wrong and he was right. However, during a mission in Central America, a pivotal experience occurred: he attended a talk on Humanae Vitae expecting to refute it but instead encountered a clear, rational defense that led to profound personal conversion. This moment brought joy in realising he had been wrong and helped crack open his heart to fully trust the Church and consider a priestly vocation.
