IS NOT THIS WHAT GOD ASKS OF YOU? - WORKING DOCUMENT FOR THE IRISH NATIONAL SYNODAL ASSEMBLY

The Working Document for the Irish National Synodal Assembly, which will take place in Gormanston, Co Meath, on Saturday, 17th October 2026, has now been published.
Entitled ‘Is not this what God asks of you?’, the document brings together the fruits of five years of prayer, listening and discernment along the Irish Synodal Pathway. It will provide the basis for the prayer, conversation, discernment and deliberation of delegates at the National Synodal Assembly.
The Irish Synodal Pathway began in 2021 with a commitment by the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference to prepare for a National Synodal Assembly or assemblies over a five-year period. At the heart of the process has been the question: “What does God want from the Church in Ireland at this time?”
From these consultations, seven priority areas were identified through the nationwide journey: belonging; co-responsibility and lay ministry; faith formation and catechesis; family; healing; women; and young people. Working groups were established around each priority, bringing together people from across Ireland with lived experience, pastoral and theological knowledge and relevant expertise. Their task has been to develop practical and actionable proposals for the Church at parish, diocesan and national level.
The new Working Document brings these stages of the journey into the preparation for the National Synodal Assembly. Nominated delegates are being asked to engage with it prayerfully before coming to Gormanston and, where possible, to discuss its proposals with others in their local communities.
