The highly anticipated first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV—Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence'—has been promulgated. Released on May 25, it was signed and dated May 15, the 135th anniversary of the first modern social encyclical, Rerum Novarum, by Pope Leo XIII.
In 1891, when Rerum Novarum was released, the Western world was reeling from the repercussions of the industrial revolution: increased poverty, poor working conditions, the emerging threat of Marxism, and abuses of laborers. Leo XIII laid the groundwork for modern Catholic social teaching by articulating the Church’s robust tradition of faith and reason.
In the same spirit as his namesake, Leo XIV has delivered Magnifica Humanitas to a world at the threshold of another great societal revolution. As Rerum Novarum engaged the challenges of its historical moment, Magnifica Humanitas addresses the profound challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence by proposing Catholicism’s rich vision of the human person grounded in Christ.
