MENTAL HEALTH AND CARING FOR THE CARERS

By Prof. Patricia Casey

In the video below, Patricia Casey gives us a working definition of a ‘Carer’, and gives examples of the type of support they provide both practical and emotional. Prof. Casey explains the risk of relapse due to emotional over-involvement by a carer. She refers to findings of research studies by Rethink (UK), Care Alliance (Ireland) and a recent study by her department published this year in the Irish Journal of Medical Science. Prof. Casey particularly elaborates on the research findings related to ‘difficulty accessing information from the treating team’ and options for carers.
