SPIRIT OF THE SEASON

Philip Quirke

'Christmas fast on Main St., outside St. Ibar’s church,

designed to make us extra-sure that no one’s in the lurch.

Background sounds of muzak, the cries, the songs, the rush,

accompany the anxious search for presents plain or plush.

Our cheerful clergy fasting in cloaks to beat the cold,

can turn the brass of boredom into smiles of shining gold.

‘Kindness draws out kindness’ is a Word from God above.

Among the gifts He has to give is an endless store of Love.

The things we share have value, but a good heart beats them all;

so after fast the feasting, Happy Christmas to you all'.
