On Thursday 6th November, we celebrate the feast day of All the Saints of Ireland. This is an opportunity for us as a nation to honour the saints from our land and to give thanks to God for their witness. The late Pope Francis spoke about 'the saints next door' as he encouraged us to look closer for examples of lives of holiness while urging us to lead holy lives ourselves. He also reminded us that the world needs new saints as signs of hope for the times in which we live.
For this feast of All the Saints of Ireland, one young Irish woman is on her way to becoming a saint. Her name is Sr Clare Crockett from Derry who was an Irish sister living and working in Ecuador when an earthquake hit her convent and killed her in April 2016. Since her death, many have testified to the brief but extraordinary life she lived as a witness of Gospel joy and as servant of the poor. Sr Clare's road towards canonisation as a saint has already begun and she is already known as 'Servant of God' which is the first step along the path that leads to sainthood.
A few years ago, a documentary was made about her life entitled 'All or Nothing'. You can find it below. May the life of Sr Clare inspire many young people to know that they too are called to be the Irish saints of the future.
