As the Church prepares to declare St John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church, Bishop Fintan Monaghan explains why he is a saint for our times. He also tells us something of Newman's understanding of the development of doctrine, his philosophy of education and the importance of conscience that he described as the 'primordial vicar of Christ in the soul'.
