Recently, Pope Leo XIV released his highly anticipated groundbreaking first Encyclical. It’s called 'Magnifica Humanitas', or magnificent humanity. Now, this is addressing the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence, the concentration of digital power, and the impact that this can have on humanity. The message in the encyclical is an urgent warning against the concentration of immense tech power in the hands of a few corporate giants, things like the erosion of human relationships and the automation of warfare.
But, the Holy Father’s ultimate question isn’t about machines or AI, but about us. In an era that’s obsessed with optimisation and efficiency, how do we protect the unique, unoptimisable grandeur of being human?
In the interview below, Wendy Grace is joined by Natalie Doherty, the Diocesan Faith Development Coordinator for Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Dublin.
Ms Doherty unpacks Magnifica Humanitas, and talks about what it means to be magnificently human in an increasingly AI-driven world.
